What is Abstract Art?
Art that does not try to be representational, but is more about achieving the effect or mood of reality through shapes, form, colors, and textures.
What does it mean when a piece of art is Asymmetrical?
It means it is different on opposite sides, or off-balance. You cannot mirror one side over to the other side and get an Asymmetrical image.
What part of an image is the Background?
The objects that are most distant, and usually in the back of an image, and not usually the focus.
What is Balance as it pertains to a piece of art?
Balance is the equalization of visual weight of objects, colors, texture, and space. Imagine putting the art on a scale, if it seems like neither side would tip, then the image has balance.
What is Chiaroscuro?
Italian for light-dark. It is using shading in drawing and painting, to have the effect of light and shadow and give the feeling of realism or appearing 3-D.
When are colors Complementary?
When they are found opposite each other on the color wheel.
What does the Composition of a work of art mean?
It describes the arrangement of visual elements in a work of art, separate from the subject of the art itself.
What is Depth in art?
The illusion of 3-Dimensional space or distance in a 2-D image.
Why are the Elements of Art important to all artists?
They are the building blocks of everything we create.
How do you know what the Focal Point in an artwork is?
It is the area of the image where the emphasis is the greatest, and our attention is immediately drawn to it, or constantly brought back to it.
What part of an image is the Foreground?
The part of an image that appears the closest to the viewer.
What is Form?
A 3-Dimensional geometric shape (as opposed to Shape, which is a 2-Dimensional enclosed space).
What is Hue?
A color or shade. The attribute that gives a color it's ability to be classified as "red" or "green" etc.
What is a Line?
A mark with a greater length than it's width. Can be in any direction, straight or curved, thick or thin.
What are Primary colors?
The only true colors as you can never mix to get the three colors- Red, Blue, and Yellow. These 3 colors make up every other color.
What is a Secondary color?
The result of mixing 2 primary colors- Orange, Green, and Violet.
What is an Intermediate color?
The result of mixing a Primary and Secondary color. (ie: Yellow-green, Blue-Violet, Red-orange)
What is the Texture in a work of art?
A whole or part of the surface of the art that has a quality that can be seen and felt. The texture does not always feel how it looks, as a drawing of a bear can have a fuzzy texture but it still feels smooth on the paper. Can be rough, smooth, soft, or hard, among many others.
What is Movement in a work of art?
The path our eye takes when it looks at a piece of art, usually achieved by the artist through directing us via lines, edges, shape, contours, and colors.
How does Repetition contribute to a work of art?
It can work with Pattern to give a feeling of activity or energy, and can also help create a sense of unity in the art.
What is Proportion in a work of art?
The feeling of unity when all parts of the image relate well to each other, or make sense, or we feel it is reflective of real life.
How does Variety work in a piece of art?
By using several elements of design to carry the viewer's eye and attention around the work of art.
How does Unity contribute to a work of art?
It creates a feeling of harmony between all the parts of the image, and gives a sense of wholeness.
What is Representational Art?
Art made up of images that are clearly recognizable for what they are supposed to be.
