NETW 561 Societal Changes as a Result of Wireless Discussions 1 Week 1
Describe a major change in our society that was the direct result of wireless. Was it a good change or a bad change? Why?…
There are a number of drivers behind this; advances in technology, IoT, natural evolution of technology. We’ll still have wired networks, but businesses in particular will derive a number of benefits from the wired to wireless network evolution. What do you think some of those benefits are?
Wireless AP’s are really just an extension of the Wired LAN to extend it to areas where the wired infrastructure is not in place, or to provide mobile connectivity for the business users. Was that the perspective, that you had or were you looking at it differently?
The concept of wireless technology is a big topic to discuss more especially how it is transforming our society today. Wireless have become so evolved that is almost implemented in everywhere from even kitchen appliances to automobile and far beyond.

NETW 561 The Goals of the FCC Discussions 1 Week 2
The lecture lists five goals of the FCC. Use critical thinking to apply those goals to wireless. Describe how each one might apply to today’s wireless market. Use examples to support your position….
That merger was blocked for the reasons you mentioned. I found it quite curious as to why the T-Mobile and Sprint merger ran into so much opposition. One would have thought that the merged company would have leveled the playing field against AT&T and Verizon, thoughts here?
The five goals of the FCC have been to promote competition, deregulation, protect consumers, bring communications services and technology to every American and foster innovation. In regards to the wireless market the FCC has done a good job by keeping the market open and not allowing for any one natural monopoly to control products and services

NETW 561 Wireless Data Revolution Discussions 1 Week 4
The book says we are in a wireless data revolution and wireless data did pass voice in usage in 2010. However, voice still accounts for a sizeable portion of cellular usage. Do you see the relative usage of voice decreasing further? Do you think voice has a future in the mobile space at all? What evidence do you have for your position?
For starters note that I call it evolution. Do you think it is an evolution or revolution? What we’re looking to discuss is the future of voice on the cellular network. Yes, we can stipulate here and now that we will continue to use our phones to talk as opposed to just having them be a paperweight. The questions to discuss might include:
1.From a strictly business perspective, what do you think the future of wireless voice is?
2.Will we still have plans that include X number of voice minutes?

NETW 561 Is Bluetooth a Good Solution? Discussions 1 Week 5
As the book says on page 249, Bluetooth is a “low-power, low-cost radio interface between mobile phones and their accessories.” Do you think Bluetooth is a good solution for connecting phones and their accessories? Do you think there will be a better solution soon? Or is Bluetooth here to stay?….
As we are really at the beginning of the automated home, it will be interesting to see what all this connectivity provides us. Any thoughts?
Wireless charging is one of those applications. Speaking of which, there are a couple of other interesting options, too. Here’s one that’s gaining some traction as well. It’s based on the Duracell Powermat technology.

NETW 561 What Happened to the Local Wireless? Discussions 1 Week 6
The book talks a lot about the Wireless Local Loop (WLL) and Local Multipoint Distribution Services (LMDS), but if you scan the news today, you don’t read much about these services. Why do you think that is? What do you think is taking their place?…
With respect to phasing put POTS, there are no direct costs per se, with the decommissioning of POTS. That infrastructure has (for the most part) been fully depreciated off of the providers books (assets).
The costs associated with deploying the wireless or fiber optics infrastructure is paid for by the providers as it’s new assets (plant, equipment, software) that they are deploying as a new long-term asset. Ultimately it’s the…

NETW 561 4G Technology Competition Discussions 1 Week 7
In the United States, there is a great deal of competition between LTE (Verizon), WiMax (Sprint), and HSPA (AT&T) for 4G dollars. Is this competition in the best interest of the general public? Europe does not seem to have this competition among technologies. Is that a better way? Should the government just pick a standard and mandate it? Or should we let the marketplace decide?
NETW 561 Is Data the Future? Discussions 2 Week 7
Many wireless carriers are spending a lot of money on promoting wireless data. Do you think that is a good idea? Is data more or less profitable for wireless carriers than voice?…
What are the current hot services and applications that are driving data usage? Why are these services hot and what is the impetus? Is it needs driven or market driven?
